MASSACHUSETTS NEXT TO CONSIDER ONLINE POKER LEGISLATION

F5In what is almost a weekly clamour for individual states to legalise a form of online poker, lawmakers in Massachusetts are considering plan to grant three intrastate poker licenses that could legalise the game.

As reported in the Boston Herald, the State recently granted authorisation for a bricks and mortar casino to be built within state lines, but the holder of the licence is yet to be determined. The licenses, which will be taxed 25 per cent, could come with a $10 million price tag.

Massachusetts joins other states such as California, New Jersey, Delaware and Nevada in the clamour for online poker; Nevada leads all of them in terms of progress made, being already at the licensing phase.

The initiative in Massachusetts was pioneered by Norfolk Republican Rep. Dan Winslow, who sites the opportunity to create more state revenue as added impetus for the plan to move through the State House and Senate before the summer recess.

“Internet poker is a game of skill that fits our high tech job profile perfectly,” said Winslow in a statement. “We can create new, high paying tech jobs by leading the launch of this new industry in the United States.”
